Building community in IT.","As a mentor at Girls.js I led small groups through JavaScript, HTML, and CSS basics. For me it was combining learning to code with building confidence and breaking barriers in the industry.\n\nWorking in small groups let me adapt the pace to each person, create space for questions and experiments, and help with both technical issues and the frustration of “code not working.” I treat mentoring as accompanying people in learning, not just transferring knowledge.\n\n## Challenges and successes\n\n### Online mentoring (2020 edition)\n\nCOVID-19 forced workshops online. With CodeSandbox Live we kept interactivity and live support despite the distance. Turned out the willingness to learn carries well through the screen.\n\n### On-site workshops (Łódź)\n\nAt the Łódź editions I could watch teamwork in person. Watching participants solve problems together and get excited about their first working scripts was satisfying.\n\nGirls.js is built on accessible knowledge (workshops for people from different backgrounds), diversity in IT, and support – nobody is left alone with a console error.\n\nTaking part as a mentor gave me a chance to share experience and a reminder that education and mutual help build community.
